Is ranch dressing gluten free?

Depends on the product. That is what 3 publishers say about ranch dressing; their exact words are below. Packaged foods differ, so check the label of the product you buy.

What the sources tell us

The Celiac Disease Foundation says salad dressings and marinades may contain malt vinegar, soy sauce or flour.[5]

NIDDK lists salad dressing among the foods where gluten may be found, and the Gluten Intolerance Group says dressings can contain small amounts of ingredients derived from gluten-containing grains.[4][6]

The Gluten Intolerance Group list of hidden gluten adds that a dressing could contain modified food starch used to emulsify or thicken. In the U.S. that starch is usually made from corn, and if it is made from wheat the label must say so, as modified wheat starch or modified food starch (wheat).[7]

Cross-contact matters too. The group warns that a salad bar puts naturally gluten-free foods next to croutons, crackers and some salad dressings, and that serving utensils can end up in both. Its tailgate guide says to avoid some sauces, dressings and dips unless the package shows they are labeled or GFCO-certified gluten-free.[8][9]

The GFCO list includes Ranch Dressing (16oz) from Primal Kitchen, Ranch Dressing & Marinade from Sprouts and Non-Dairy Ranch Dressing (8 fl oz) from Organicville.[2][1][3]
