What the sources tell us
The Celiac Disease Foundation lists pretzels with goldfish and graham crackers under crackers in its list of common foods that contain gluten.[4]
The Gluten Intolerance Group tailgate guide says to avoid both soft and hard pretzels unless the package shows they are labeled, or preferably GFCO-certified, gluten-free. It adds that even verified gluten-free foods can pick up gluten from gluten-containing foods nearby, so it suggests keeping them separate.[5]
Pretzels also turn up inside other foods. In its Halloween candy guide the group says to be extra careful with candies that have a crunchy, cookie, pretzel or wafer component, and it notes that wheat, as a major allergen, must be listed on U.S. labels.[8]
Gluten-free pretzels do exist. The group suggests gluten-free pretzels dipped in melted gluten-free chocolate as a homemade candy, says to look for the GFCO certification mark when shopping for candy, and recommends GFCO certified gluten-free pretzels for serving with game day dips.[6][7]
The GFCO list includes Sticks Pretzels from liveGfree, GF Sea Salt Pretzels Twists from Good Graces and GF Pretzels - Twist from Gratify.[1][2][3]
