Is hummus gluten free?

Sources disagree. The publishers we cite give different answers for hummus; both sides are shown below, in their own words. Packaged foods differ, so check the label of the product you buy.

What the sources tell us

The Gluten Intolerance Group calls hummus one of the best known naturally gluten-free foods of Israel and the Middle East. It says that in Israel hummus is made fresh, eaten warm or at room temperature and topped with anything from grilled vegetables to nuts to hard-boiled eggs, and that as a main course it can be served warm with olive oil, a slice of lemon and a gluten-free flatbread.[1]

The same group words it more carefully in a shopping guide. There it says store-bought hummus is widely available and generally gluten-free, and that blending your own from canned chickpeas, olive oil, lemon and garlic is quick and inexpensive.[4]

Recipes also differ by region. The group notes that Turkish-style hummus is different from the version many people know and is often made with yogurt.[2]

Its picnic guide calls hummus tasty, gluten-free and perfect for dipping. The same guide warns that using one knife for regular bread and gluten-free bread is a common cross-contact mistake.[3]

The National Celiac Association suggests hummus with vegetables or crackers, or spread on a gluten-free wrap or tortilla, as a quick snack. In the same answer it recommends choosing labeled gluten-free nuts, seeds and grain-based products.[5]
