Is french fries gluten free?
Depends on the product. That is what 3 publishers say about french fries; their exact words are below. Packaged foods differ, so check the label of the product you buy.
What the sources tell us
French fries start from potatoes, which the National Celiac Association says are naturally gluten free when whole. Once potatoes are processed into products such as French fries, it says they may not always be gluten free, and it advises watching for wheat, rye, barley, malt and oat ingredients when the product is not labeled gluten free.[7]
Two things can add gluten. The Celiac Disease Foundation warns about batter containing wheat flour and about cross-contact from fryers. The Gluten Intolerance Group says to avoid crunchy, seasoned or battered fries, or fries with gravy or sauces, unless you can verify the ingredients, and notes that frozen seasoned fries from the grocery store could also contain wheat flour.[5][6]
On shared oil, the group says fries from fast food restaurants are most likely fried in the same oil as gluten-containing foods, and the association suggests asking how potatoes are made or fried when eating out.[6][7]
A study led by the Celiac Disease Foundation and published in October 2026 tested 55 orders of French fries cooked in fryers that were also used for gluten-containing foods. Six of them, about 11%, were above 20 ppm of gluten, the FDA threshold for foods labeled gluten-free.[4]
Across all the fried foods in that study, none of the samples from places reporting daily oil replacement exceeded 20 ppm, compared with four of 35 samples from places reporting weekly replacement. The foundation notes that this observational study cannot establish that oil-change frequency caused the difference, and the lead author says it is not a green light to eat from any shared fryer.[4]
The GFCO list includes Crinkle Cut Fries from Roots Farm Fresh, CRINKLE FRIES LBS from LENG-D'OR and Straight Cut Potato Fries from Stolon Superfoods, and GFCO counts each as certified only when its package carries the GFCO mark.[2][1][3]
