Is cheesecake gluten free?
Depends on the product. That is what 2 publishers say about cheesecake; their exact words are below. Packaged foods differ, so check the label of the product you buy.
What the sources tell us
The Celiac Disease Foundation lists cheesecake filling among foods that may contain gluten, because some recipes include wheat flour.[4]
The Gluten Intolerance Group looks at the dessert in two parts. It says the cake part of a traditional cheesecake typically uses gluten-free ingredients, such as block cream cheese, sugar, lemon, vanilla extract and eggs, but the crust does not, unless it is made specifically with gluten-free flour or graham crackers.[6]
The crust matters because the Celiac Disease Foundation lists graham crackers among common foods that contain gluten, along with cakes, cookies and pie crusts.[4]
The group's advice is to ask questions when eating cheesecake out and to read the label when buying it at the store. For a product that is not certified or labeled gluten-free, its label reading tips say the product is not gluten-free if the ingredient list includes wheat, rye, barley, malt or brewer's yeast, or oats without a gluten-free label or certification mark.[6][5]
The GFCO list includes GF CHEESECAKE NY from Trumps Food, Assorted Mini Cheesecakes from GeeFree and GLUTEN FREE LEMON CHEESECAKE from Sprouts Farmers Market. GFCO says that a product on its list is not certified if its packaging does not carry the certification mark.[3][2][1]
